January 10 – New Review by Stefan – MOTIVIK – DEATH OF THE GUNMAN (Roxx Records)

Motivik is a relatively new band (or should I say a project) from Atlanta, Georgia that was founded by multi-instrumentalist Ryan Roebuck and singer Courtney Simmons. Both have known each other since they were 15 years old playing Metal music in a band called Unorthodox back in the 90s. Due to circumstances this band was dissolved in 1998, Ryan and Courtney had no more contact with each other since then… good news to report is that last year, they reconnected ! Basically Motivik was started in 2020 and we all know what a bizarre year this was because of the horrible Covid 19 pandemic.  Musical mastermind Ryan Roebuck worked on new songs in his own recording studio, during several months he operated really hard to get everything on track. All efforts paid off because in January 2021 the first Motivik album “Death Of The Gunman” was released by LA based, Christian Metal label Roxx Records. Produced, engineered & mixed by Ryan himself at Motivik Studios (executive producer was Roxx Records’ CEO Bill Bafford), the nine songs on the album immediately left a certain impression after a first listen.

Getting something decent into the world with only two musicians is not an easy job, more of a daring undertaking, but I can immediately add that Motivik has succeeded in its aim. I find it curious, to put it mildly, the way the songs are written. Remarkable fact is that Motivik uses different singers, each with their own character. Both Ryan Roebuck and Courtney Simmons share vocal performances, both to sound totally different from each other and use their own singing abilities properly. I’m not really sure who provides the somewhat melancholic vocal lines, not really my thing, but nevertheless I have no reason to be critical. READ MORE…
